Principal RF Engineer

Summary: The Principal RF Engineer role involves developing multifunctional RF, PCB, and Module designs for a defence client in Edinburgh, primarily focusing on advanced radar systems for military aircraft. The position requires a senior-level engineer to manage the full hardware lifecycle, from concept to production support, while ensuring robust design and documentation practices. The role is largely remote with occasional on-site requirements and operates inside IR35 regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage the full hardware lifecycle for products, including system concept, detailed design, prototyping, testing, verification, and production support.
• Create high-quality designs, conduct design reviews, document work products, and maintain configuration management.
• Develop multifunctional RF PCB and Module designs using the latest technologies.
• Design and validate test prototypes, ensuring successful design verification.
• Prepare manufacturing data packs and provide technical support to subcontractors and engineering interfaces.
• Collaborate with Systems, Test, and Electronics engineers to solve integration problems on advanced systems.

Key Skills:

• Expertise in microwave PCB materials and design techniques.
• Experience in RF Microwave Sub-System Design.
• Proficiency with microwave design tools (e.g., AWR, VSS, ADS, Systemvue, Matlab).
• Knowledge of EM 3D and 2D simulation techniques (e.g., CST).
• Experience with GaAs/GaN MMIC design and application.
• Familiarity with RF Synthesiser design using DDS and PLL technologies.
• Understanding of RF downconverter and digitiser design.
• Ability to design passive microwave structures.
• Experience in low phase noise design and measurement.
• Proficiency in non-linear circuit simulation.
• Familiarity with PCB schematic capture tools (e.g., Mentor).
• Experience with lab measurements (signal generation, spectrum analysis, vector network analysis).
• Skills in requirements capture and management.
• Technical report writing and design reviews.
• Knowledge of design for manufacture and cost.
