Your new role
An ODP's role is to provide complex care to patients at all stages of their operation, including when they receive anaesthetic and during their post-surgery recovery. An ODP will be present and involved with every stage of operation. These stages are:
- Anaesthetic: An ODP helps and supports patients before surgery, prepares a wide range of specialist equipment and drugs, and assists the anaesthetist in administering anaesthesia and monitoring the patient's condition during surgery.
- Surgery: An ODP prepares all the necessary instruments and equipment for surgery, provides the correct surgical instruments and materials to the surgeon, maintains a sterile environment during surgery, and acts as a link between the surgical team and other parts of the theatre and hospital.
- Recovery: An ODP supports and monitors the patient on their arrival into the recovery unit, provides appropriate treatment until they have recovered from the effects of the anaesthesia and/or surgery, and assesses the patient so they can be discharged back to a ward or transferred to another unit.
What you\'ll need to succeed
- To have at least one year of experience as a registered nurse in an acute medical or surgical setting.
- To have the relevant knowledge and skills to care for patients with complex and diverse needs.
- To have the ability to work under pressure and cope with challenging situations.
- Right to Work in the UK
- Immunisations up to date (Hep B, MMR, TB etc).
- Registration with HCPC
