Job Description: The role of Consultant in Anaesthetics focuses on general perioperative medicine, vascular anaesthesia, and management teaching. Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities The post has arisen to meet the demand driven by the expansion of theatre activity and retirements. Job Planning: The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement between the appointee and the Chief-of-Service, that sets out a consultant’s duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a consultant’s professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It provides a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it includes personal objectives, including details of links to wider service objectives, and details of support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives. Changes having budgetary or contractual implications would also need the agreement of the Chief Executive. One half day per month is dedicated to audit and teaching during which time all routine work is suspended. All staff are expected to attend except for those providing emergency care cover and those on leave. The directorate meeting is also held at this time. It is assumed that every member of the department will play a full part in formal and informal teaching of medical and other staff, and this is recognised as part of Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).
