Position: Applications Engineer
Stafford ST16Salary: 23.43 per hour PAYE or ( 31.48 per hour Umbrella) 12 month rolling contract / with progression 37.5 hour per weekAbout the Role:
As an integral member of the Applications Engineering team within the Service and Customer Support group (SCS), you'll be the primary technical interface for our valued 3rd party customers. The core responsibility revolves around seamless product integration into customer's machinery, from engine selection and validation to production.
This role encompasses regional and global travel, providing crucial support for key customer projects spanning multiple sectors, including Industrial, Agriculture, and EP, focusing engines ranging from 0.5L to 18L+. This diverse exposure will enable you to expand your technical and commercial proficiency while deepening expertise in our products, market segments, customer requirements, machine performance, New Product Introduction (NPI), and customer relationship management.

Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the entire customer technical relationship, overseeing projects from conceptualisation to delivery, supporting sales, and serving as a trusted advisor to customers. This includes conducting basic installation tests on engines.
- Enhance the technical expertise and capabilities of Caterpillar Dealers and Perkins Distributors, ensuring a world-class service by providing necessary support for technical queries.
- Collaborate with the team and customers to identify optimal technical engine solutions that align with customer project objectives in terms of quality, timeliness, and cost-effectiveness.
- Provide guidance on enhancing machine efficiency and performance through appropriate engine selection, leveraging deep insights into customer machines, prompt issue resolution, and addressing requests for new designs.
- Approve customer machines for production, assessing approval risk, and balancing installation standards with customer experience and machine requirements.
Skills and Experience:
Essential:
- Strong technical background, ideally with a degree in mechanical, electronic, electrical, or control systems engineering. Relevant job experience will also be considered.
- Proficient knowledge and experience in engine and/or machine integration.
- Customer-centric approach with excellent troubleshooting and fault diagnosis abilities.
- Outstanding communication skills across diverse cultures and organisational levels.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio).
Desirable:
- Prior customer or supplier-facing experience would be advantageous.
- Previous involvement in engine system development, preferably in the off-highway industry.
- Detailed understanding of engine system architecture.
- Familiarity with CANape and CANalyzer diagnostic/development tools.
- Experience in running and participating in component and system FMEA's.
- Knowledge of the Caterpillar NPI process.
- Coaching and training abilities, coupled with strong technical leadership skills.
- Capacity to handle multifunctional assignments and excellent organisational skills.
Additional Information:
- No direct reports.
- Approximately 25% travel to global locations with occasional requests for 24-hour availability.
